Rating definitions

The Scientific Committee rated journals from 4 to 1 (4 is highest), with a further Journal of Distinction (4*) designation for a small number of grade 4 journals. Ratings reflect expert judgement informed by metrics, not a weighted average of metrics.

4* Journals of Distinction

A small number of grade 4 journals recognised world-wide as exemplars of excellence. As the world-leading journals in the field they rank among the highest on citation metrics, with a rigorous and demanding selection and review process. Accepted papers bring large-scale data and/or theoretical rigour, are finely crafted, and provide major advances to their field.

4 Top journals in their field

All journals rated 4 publish the most original and best-executed research. They typically have high submission and low acceptance rates, papers are heavily refereed, and they generally have among the highest citation metrics in their field.

3 Highly regarded journals

Original, well-executed research. These journals have good submission rates, are very selective and heavily refereed, and generally have good to excellent citation metrics relative to their field.

2 Well regarded journals

Original research of an acceptable standard, fully refereed according to accepted conventions. Citation metrics are more modest in some cases; many excellent practitioner-oriented articles appear in 2-rated journals.

1 Recognised journals

Research of a recognised but more modest standard. Papers are often refereed relatively lightly, and few journals in this category carry a citation metric.
